Current Event 8

“Fate of 115 abducted girls unknown, Nigeria says.” Fox News. Fox News Network, 17 Apr. 2014. Web. 17 Apr. 2014. <http://www.foxnews.com/world/2014/04/17/fate-115-abducted-girls-unknown-nigeria-says/>.

While students at Gaston Early College complain about their school work female students in Nigeria fight to have an education at all. 115 female students were abducted by islamic extremists on Thursday. The government had already closed all schools in Borno about three weeks ago but, the female students that were kidnapped were recalled so that they could write their final exams. There were more females that were abduced but, a couple were able to escape here and there at any opportunity they were given.

The extremists that did the kidnapping were acting like soldiers and they told them they had to move the girls for safety purposes. Towards the end of loading the girls into the back of the truck is when they started shooting and killed a police officer and guard that were guarding the school. The Borno state government offered a $300,000 reward for any information that would help them to the release of the women between the ages of 16-18.

It relates to a paper that I wrote dealing with foreign problems in English class. The paper that I typed was about prostitution in Thailand. These two topics are similar because they both involved kidnap. A lot of the women in prostitution were kidnaped at young ages.

I believe something should be done. It is a terrible thought that young women in foreign countries can not go to school without having to fear what will happen. Education is a gift that many Americans see as a right which keeps us close minded toward what is going on around us.

How does the author support his claim?

The author support their claims by getting quotes and using facts. The thing the author does to help support her claim is facts. The author uses this fact to reinforce the severity of the problems in Nigeria “More than 1,500 people have been killed this year”(Fox News). Also the author got quotes from the principal confirming that some of the girls had been kidnaped. The principal said "So let it be clear that all the information passed on to the media by the military concerning 107 girls is not true”(Fox News). The principal confirms that there were girls kidnaped but not how many. The author used facts and quotes to support her claim and it was very successful at making the article informative.

Current Event 7

Ellis, Ralph. “Flight 370: Search teams investigate sounds picked up in ocean.” CNN. Turner broadcasting system, 6 April 2014. Web. 6 April 2014 <http://www.cnn.com/2014/04/05/world/asia/malaysia-airlines-plane/>.

After the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 there have been many different sounds that were picked up by ships in the Southern Indian Ocean. A Chinese ship claimed to get electronic signals twice which had many people hoping that it came from the planes little black box that is supposed to send out signals.

The flight consisted of 239 passengers and people searching have been very desperate to any type of leads as to where the plane may have ended up and if it is in one piece. A search that was conducted had ten military planes, two civil aircraft, and thirteen ships. Over the past month there have been many sightings of white objects floating and other leads but, still no plane.

This article relates to US History because we talk about world affairs and once again the US is in something that does not concern them. I think the event is very tragic.

I feel like it should not be hard to track a huge airplane that should have a tracker on it. This event affects me because I hate planes and this reinforces my reasons for not going on them.

How does the structure of the text refine and support the author’s claim?

The structure of the the text supports the authors claims by reinforcing the importance of the things found. The author uses many quotes from officials that support her claims. The author says “The signal "is the standard beacon frequency" for the plane's cockpit voice recorder” (Ellis). The author uses that to prove that there is a chance that the sounds found could be important. Also the author uses facts about the search to support her claims of the search being “fevered”. The author uses facts such as telling us that 10 military planes, two civil aircraft and 13 ships will assist in Sunday's search for the airline. These facts help support the author claims of the search being “fevered”. The author support her claims by getting quotes from other people and by giving facts.
