“Teen suspect in fatal Conn. stabbing remains under suicide watch” Fox News. Fox News Network, 2 May. 2014. Web. 2 May. 2014. <http://www.foxnews.com/us/2014/05/02/teen-suspect-in-fatal-conn-stabbing-remains-under-suicide-watch/>.

A teen in Connecticut was put on suicide watch until his hearing on June 5th. The teen allegedly went in to a Connecticut high school during prom and stabbed a girl to death. They believe the motive is that the girl would not go to prom with him.

This event related to some of the Shakespeare plays. Throughout all of the plays there is senseless killings that have weak motives.

This article is crazy. I do not see why someone would react to rejection so hard. I also feel like this even is tragic because two lives of young people are gone forever. The girl may have actually lost her life but the guy has also lost his life because he will probably be in prison a long time.

This event affects me in a few ways. It makes me realize that events that take place can cause very dramatic effects on people. Maybe the girl was rough in the way she rejected him and all of this could have been stopped before it started.

What is the author’s point of view, and how does it impact the overall effect of the text?

The author’s point of view is to inform. The author uses very few emotional words. The author said Plaskon was arraigned Tuesday at a medical facility, where his attorneys say he's been undergoing psychiatric evaluation.”(Fox News). The author uses no emotion in this sentence at all. Also the author has no emotion in this sentence “Christopher Plaskon appeared in Milford Superior Court Friday, one week after he allegedly killed classmate Maren Sanchez in the hallway of Jonathan Law High School in Milford.” The informative side of this article makes it hard to relate to.

“Fate of 115 abducted girls unknown, Nigeria says.” Fox News. Fox News Network, 17 Apr. 2014. Web. 17 Apr. 2014. <http://www.foxnews.com/world/2014/04/17/fate-115-abducted-girls-unknown-nigeria-says/>.

While students at Gaston Early College complain about their school work female students in Nigeria fight to have an education at all. 115 female students were abducted by islamic extremists on Thursday. The government had already closed all schools in Borno about three weeks ago but, the female students that were kidnapped were recalled so that they could write their final exams. There were more females that were abduced but, a couple were able to escape here and there at any opportunity they were given.

The extremists that did the kidnapping were acting like soldiers and they told them they had to move the girls for safety purposes. Towards the end of loading the girls into the back of the truck is when they started shooting and killed a police officer and guard that were guarding the school. The Borno state government offered a $300,000 reward for any information that would help them to the release of the women between the ages of 16-18.

It relates to a paper that I wrote dealing with foreign problems in English class. The paper that I typed was about prostitution in Thailand. These two topics are similar because they both involved kidnap. A lot of the women in prostitution were kidnaped at young ages.

I believe something should be done. It is a terrible thought that young women in foreign countries can not go to school without having to fear what will happen. Education is a gift that many Americans see as a right which keeps us close minded toward what is going on around us.

How does the author support his claim?

The author support their claims by getting quotes and using facts. The thing the author does to help support her claim is facts. The author uses this fact to reinforce the severity of the problems in Nigeria “More than 1,500 people have been killed this year”(Fox News). Also the author got quotes from the principal confirming that some of the girls had been kidnaped. The principal said "So let it be clear that all the information passed on to the media by the military concerning 107 girls is not true”(Fox News). The principal confirms that there were girls kidnaped but not how many. The author used facts and quotes to support her claim and it was very successful at making the article informative.

Ellis, Ralph. “Flight 370: Search teams investigate sounds picked up in ocean.” CNN. Turner broadcasting system, 6 April 2014. Web. 6 April 2014 <http://www.cnn.com/2014/04/05/world/asia/malaysia-airlines-plane/>.

After the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 there have been many different sounds that were picked up by ships in the Southern Indian Ocean. A Chinese ship claimed to get electronic signals twice which had many people hoping that it came from the planes little black box that is supposed to send out signals.

The flight consisted of 239 passengers and people searching have been very desperate to any type of leads as to where the plane may have ended up and if it is in one piece. A search that was conducted had ten military planes, two civil aircraft, and thirteen ships. Over the past month there have been many sightings of white objects floating and other leads but, still no plane.

This article relates to US History because we talk about world affairs and once again the US is in something that does not concern them. I think the event is very tragic.

I feel like it should not be hard to track a huge airplane that should have a tracker on it. This event affects me because I hate planes and this reinforces my reasons for not going on them.

How does the structure of the text refine and support the author’s claim?

The structure of the the text supports the authors claims by reinforcing the importance of the things found. The author uses many quotes from officials that support her claims. The author says “The signal "is the standard beacon frequency" for the plane's cockpit voice recorder” (Ellis). The author uses that to prove that there is a chance that the sounds found could be important. Also the author uses facts about the search to support her claims of the search being “fevered”. The author uses facts such as telling us that 10 military planes, two civil aircraft and 13 ships will assist in Sunday's search for the airline. These facts help support the author claims of the search being “fevered”. The author support her claims by getting quotes from other people and by giving facts.

Westerholm, Russell. "Ancient Stick Insects Used Plant Cloaking Mechanism at Least 126 Million Years Ago." University Herald. Np, 20 Mar. 2014. Web. 20 Mar. 2014 <http://www.universityherald.com/articles/8258/20140320/ancient-stick-insects-used-plant-cloaking-mechanism-at-least-126-million-years-ago.htm>.
A stick like like fossil was found that dates back to a 126 million years. The discovery puts stick insects ahead of flowering plants. Unlike modern stick animals the ancient stick insects were a lot smaller. The ancient stick insects males were only about two inches and the female were about the same.+

This is really cool. It kinda makes me think though because stick animals were suppose to have copied plants as camouflage. The crazy part is that the fossil is older then the first flowering plant. Unless flowering plants are older then we really think. This relates to my biology class because we learned a lot of things about fossils and flowering plants. This article effects me because maybe what we were taught about flowering plants was wrong or the insect.

  • How does the author support his claim? Use evidence from the selection to support your answer.

The author in this article supports her claim in many ways. One way the author supports her claim is using quotes from the people who studied the fossil. The author claims about the insects coming before we though. One quote she uses is when co-author Olivier Bethoux said "Our grand-cousins were already fooled by grand-cousins of stick and leaf insects 126 million years ago"(Wsterholm). The author also uses The Los Angeles Times Report to support her article. The Los Angeles Times Report said "The researchers found the fossilized insect would have lived in the Cretaceous Jehol biota period."(Wsterholm). This supports the authors claim that the insect came way earlier than we thought. The author used quotes from reliable sources to support her claims throughout this article.

Sonawane, Vishakha. “Philadelphia School District Sued for Religious Discrimination.” HNGN. HNGN, 6 Mar. 2014. Web. 6 Mar. 2014. <http://www.hngn.com/articles/25910/20140306/philadelphia-school-district-sued-religious-discrimination.htm>.

A worker for a Philadelphia School district has been “discriminated” against. The school has a new policy where no employee could have a beard more than a quarter length. The employ explained that it was part of his religion and that he could not cut it. The school employ of 27 years was rebuked.

This related to our world history class. We talked about many different occasions where people were discriminated for their religion. We talked about how the Jews were discriminated on many occasions.

I think if you can not comply with the work place rules you should not work there. I think to be fair the employ should be grandfathered in. If the rule was made before he had the job it would be understandable. This event affects me because I have been victim to religious discrimination. I do not see this as religious discrimination. Yes the beard is part of his religion the rule was made because of reasons that do not pertain to religion.

What is the central idea of the passage and how is it developed and refined throughout the selection?

The central idea is to inform readers on what had happened to a school employ and why it matters. The author gives facts that allows the readers to understand why the issue is important. One way the author does this is by including how long the victim had worked at the school. The author said “he started working for the school 27 years ago” (sonawane). The author allows you to realize that he is a worker that devoted a lot of his time to that school by that quote. Also the author said “Siddiq Abu-Bakr, the school police officer, said his religion required him to maintain a beard and he cannot cut it” (sonawane). The author said that the man was a school officer so that you will know that he is a good man that helped out. Also the author lets you know that he can not cut it because of his religion. The central idea was to get you on the side of the employ and the author did that with developed facts.

Current Event 4

A massive operation in mexico resulted in many arrest. One of the arrest was 56 year old Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman. Guzman was the world's top drug lord. He was listed public enemy number 1 by Chicago Crime Commission. Guzman is a prison escapee. He escaped prison in 2001. Mexico is thinking about turning him over to U.S. control to avoid him breaking out again. Last time he broke out was due to prison guards helping him. If he is taken to the U.S. it probably want happen again.

This article relates to English 10. In that class we worked on major issues in other countries, and this is a major issue on Mexico.

I believe this is a great accomplishment for American and Mexican officers. The capture of Guzman can improve living conditions for both Americans and Mexicans. Even though Guzman was a Mexican drug lord he took part in transporting it to the U.S. for sale.

  • How does the author support his claim? Use evidence from the selection to support your answer.

The Author uses many methods to support her claim. The main way the author does is by getting direct evidence from the officers. One officer said “Guzman was found with an unidentified woman” (Caldwell). The problem with many of the quotes is the officers names have to be protected. She also used a man named Vigil to support her claims about Guzman not wanting to stay in the mountains Vigil said "He got tired of living up in the mountains and not being able to enjoy the comforts of his wealth” (Caldwell). Vigil proves Alicia’s claims that Guzman came back so he could enjoy his riches. The author used all of the quotes to help support her claim successfully.

Arriero, Elisabeth. “Student, 16, is shot, wounded at Salisbury High” 11 Feb. 2014: CharoletteObserver. Web. 11 Feb. 2014. <http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2014/02/10/4681404/one-student-shot-in-salisbury.html>

A Rowan county teen was shot at Salisbury High School on Monday. The victim was a freshman at Saildbury High. The believed cause for the shooting was from a dispute that happened the weekend before. The suspects were not students at the school. One of the suspects are now in custody and the police are searching for the other.

This article relates to an English class I took. We talked about violence in people during that class. I feel like this is a terrible event. It is sad that people will try to kill someone just from an altercation. Something very similar to this happened to my dads best friend, so I feel negatively about this.

What is the impact of using Facts

The impact of using just facts in this article is negative. Due to the lack of emotion in this article it is hard to get feelings from it. The author portrays this event as an everyday thing. The author said "A Rowan County teenager is in jail after a student was shot on the Salisbury High School campus."(Arriero). The author blankly states that a Rowan County teenager was jailed without any emotion. "The victim, ninth-grader Shaleek Williams, 16, was treated at a local hospital and released hours later."(Arriero) the author tells how the victim is shot, then treated, then released without any emotion. The impact of using just facts makes it very hard to connect to the story.
