Current Event 4

A massive operation in mexico resulted in many arrest. One of the arrest was 56 year old Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman. Guzman was the world's top drug lord. He was listed public enemy number 1 by Chicago Crime Commission. Guzman is a prison escapee. He escaped prison in 2001. Mexico is thinking about turning him over to U.S. control to avoid him breaking out again. Last time he broke out was due to prison guards helping him. If he is taken to the U.S. it probably want happen again.

This article relates to English 10. In that class we worked on major issues in other countries, and this is a major issue on Mexico.

I believe this is a great accomplishment for American and Mexican officers. The capture of Guzman can improve living conditions for both Americans and Mexicans. Even though Guzman was a Mexican drug lord he took part in transporting it to the U.S. for sale.

  • How does the author support his claim? Use evidence from the selection to support your answer.

The Author uses many methods to support her claim. The main way the author does is by getting direct evidence from the officers. One officer said “Guzman was found with an unidentified woman” (Caldwell). The problem with many of the quotes is the officers names have to be protected. She also used a man named Vigil to support her claims about Guzman not wanting to stay in the mountains Vigil said "He got tired of living up in the mountains and not being able to enjoy the comforts of his wealth” (Caldwell). Vigil proves Alicia’s claims that Guzman came back so he could enjoy his riches. The author used all of the quotes to help support her claim successfully.

Current Event 3

Arriero, Elisabeth. “Student, 16, is shot, wounded at Salisbury High” 11 Feb. 2014: CharoletteObserver. Web. 11 Feb. 2014. <http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2014/02/10/4681404/one-student-shot-in-salisbury.html>

A Rowan county teen was shot at Salisbury High School on Monday. The victim was a freshman at Saildbury High. The believed cause for the shooting was from a dispute that happened the weekend before. The suspects were not students at the school. One of the suspects are now in custody and the police are searching for the other.

This article relates to an English class I took. We talked about violence in people during that class. I feel like this is a terrible event. It is sad that people will try to kill someone just from an altercation. Something very similar to this happened to my dads best friend, so I feel negatively about this.

What is the impact of using Facts

The impact of using just facts in this article is negative. Due to the lack of emotion in this article it is hard to get feelings from it. The author portrays this event as an everyday thing. The author said "A Rowan County teenager is in jail after a student was shot on the Salisbury High School campus."(Arriero). The author blankly states that a Rowan County teenager was jailed without any emotion. "The victim, ninth-grader Shaleek Williams, 16, was treated at a local hospital and released hours later."(Arriero) the author tells how the victim is shot, then treated, then released without any emotion. The impact of using just facts makes it very hard to connect to the story.
